WACOSS has welcomed today’s announcement from Police Minister Paul Papalia that Western Australia’s gun laws will be completely rewritten after it was revealed the number of guns in WA has risen more than 60% since 2013.
WACOSS CEO Louise Giolitto said she was particularly pleased to see the potential for new powers to remove guns and gun licenses from perpetrators of family and domestic violence.
“WACOSS welcomes any measures that are designed to protect the community and improve safety in Western Australia,” Ms Giolitto said.
“The number of guns present in Western Australia, and particularly in the metropolitan area, is alarming and appropriate measures need to be put in place to ensure that the community is kept safe from gun violence.
“We look forward to seeing the details of these reforms, in particular measures to protect women and children who are survivors of family and domestic violence and other vulnerable members of the community.” |
