New Unemployment Data for WA

New data reported by the ABC last week shows Western Australia’s unemployment rate has risen despite an increase in the number of people working in the state. Based on the latest figures, 100 000 people are now looking for full or part time work in WA. This is the second consecutive rise in unemployment since November and it is only slightly below the 101 000 people unemployed in February 1992. WA’s 6.5 per cent unemployment still sits well above the national average, 5.9 per cent.

Periods of high unemployment signals greater reliance on emergency relief and community services. People out of work, or underemployed, will be vulnerable to experiencing severe financial stress and even homelessness. The WACOSS Building Resilient Communities Conference is bringing together knowledgeable and experienced presenters and panelists to dissect, explore and proposes strategies to redress the issues now impacting WA communities...

Economic & Fiscal Outlook for WA

The WA Treasury is forecasting further reductions in business investment and gross state product in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2017 financial years as a result of large LNG projects finishing construction phases. Migration to the state has slowed significantly and the overall population growth rate now sits at its lowest on record at just over 1%. The Treasury’s report shows that excess supply has driven down house prices, rents and property transactions. The median house price now sits at $525,000 a drop of 2.8%, and median house rent has dropped to $380 per week, a drop of 9.1%.
