WACOSS MEDIA RELEASE: WACOSS Releases Regional Services Report, 15th February 2013
February 15, 2013
The Western Australian Council of Social Services today launched the Stronger Together: Regional & Remote Community Consultation report – the result of extensive consultation with regional community service providers during September 2012.
“Regional community services need to be adequate to cope sustainably with growth and changing population needs,” said Irina Cattalini, CEO of WACOSS today.
“Social planning needs to become a core component of regional development, with regional community networks resourced to play an active role.”
The report is the result of extensive community consultations undertaken in Broome, Geraldton, Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, and Mandurah that focused on needs of social services in regional and remote areas.
Strategies recommended by WACOSS include:
- Support to build the capacity and sustainability of regional community services
- A funding model that ensures community services can respond to population need
- Well-resourced regional community service networks
- Research and initiatives to address the social impact of mining in regional towns
