Guide helps to address sexualisation of children
The Commissioner for Children and Young People Michelle Scott has released a guide for the community to help address growing concern about the sexualisation of children.
Sexualisation of Children and its Impact on their Wellbeing – A guide for parents, members of the community, media, advertisers and retailers emphasises that the wellbeing of children and young people is everyone’s responsibility.
"Parents and professionals have raised with me their concerns about the impact of highly sexualised images on children's emotional and social development,” the Commissioner said.
“Childhood is a time of innocence, playfulness and fun. Children have the right to grow up at their own pace, without undue pressure from the mass media that surrounds them.
She said governments, industries and regulators needed to listen to the concerns of parents and work with them, not against them, to ensure children were presented with positive, healthy and age-appropriate images.
The guide is available on the Commissioner’s website, along with an issues paper and a literature review concerning the sexualisation of children.
