General WACOSS NewsNew Social Innovation GrantWACOSS is delighted to thank the State government in its announcement today of the $394,000 in funding that we will receive through the Social Innovations Grant (SIG) program. These funds will better enable WACOSS to work with our diverse sector, supporting our sectors engagement in new technologies and creating a shared space through which we can actively work together. The platform is a means through which different organisations, in different sectors and locations can showcase and search for available opportunities, projects, and resources for innovation and collaboration. Click here to read more. WACOSS WA State Election Website Launch – Tuesday 5th February 2013As part of its election strategy, WACOSS has created a specific election sub site. Centrepay does not automatically transition across for single parents moving from Parenting Payments to NewstartWACOSS is concerned that recipients of Parenting Payments who have recently been transitioned to the Newstart Allowance may no longer have their Centrepay arrangements in place. The transfer of Centrepay deductions is not an automatic process and requires the recipient to set up new arrangements through Centrepay. Click here are more details. Single Parent Payments and Financial Hardship – Advocacy CampaignWACOSS is part of a national advocacy campaign being led by ACOSS and the National Council of Single Mothers & their Children (NCSMC) to collect the stories of single parent families pushed into financial hardship by the changes to social security laws (affecting single parents) which are due to hit on 1st January. "Small Loans – BIG Difference"WA No Interest Loans Network Inc – Launches first online loan application for "no interest loans". In a "no interest loans" first for Australia, WA No interest Loans Network Inc (WA NILS) has launched its online application for the general public. Meet the febfast Challenge and Support Holyoake's Young People's ProgramFebfast has raised over $4.5 million since 2007 by challenging Australians to take a break from alcohol in February. This year, the funds will help young people who are affected directly and indirectly by substance misuse. Holyoake's Young People's Program (YPP) is one of the beneficiaries. Outstanding young people and youth workers sought for 2013 WA Youth AwardsWestern Australian residents are encouraged to nominate an outstanding young person for the annual WA Youth Awards. The awards, now in their 15th year, were established in 1999 to recognise outstanding young Western Australians aged 12 to 25 years. In 2013 the WA Youth Awards are proudly presented by the Department for Communities in partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia. The awards are supported by Lotterywest. HepatitisWA is facilitating a new peer support service for people living with hepatitis.The new peer support group assists people achieve better health and well being through discussions and activities. Volunteer Opportunities Now Open!HepatitisWA operates a telephone information & support service which is maintained by volunteer staff, and provides information on hepatitis A, B and C to the general community, and phone support to people affected by hepatitis. Volunteer staff can also participate in our Needle & Syringe Program (NSP) which provides information, equipment and referral to people who chose to inject drugs. Additionally volunteer staff have the opportunity to participate in health promotion and community education events such as University Orientation Days and Health Promotion Fairs at schools and local councils as well as information stalls at Big Day Out and other community events.
