Single Parent Payments and Financial Hardship – Advocacy Campaign

WACOSS is part of a national advocacy campaign being led by ACOSS and the National Council of Single Mothers & their Children (NCSMC) to collect the stories of single parent families pushed into financial hardship by the changes to social security laws (affecting single parents) which are due to hit on 1st January.

What does the ACNC mean for my Organisation? Free information sessions

Changes to Single Parent Payments and Financial Hardship

Recent changes to social security law affecting single parents will hit on 1st January. Single Parents who currently receive Parenting Payment Single (PPS) will no longer be eligible of or when their youngest child turns eight years old. WACOSS is concerned of the impact of this significant reduction in family income for single parents.Click here for more information.

WACOSS has prepared this briefing paper for community service organisations in Western Australia to provide a further update on progress with implementation of the Fair Work Australia (FWA) Equal Remuneration Order (ERO) for community service workers covered by the Federal SCHCDS Award. Meet the febfast Challenge and Support Holyoake's Young People's Program

Febfast has raised over $4.5 million since 2007 by challenging Australians to take a break from alcohol in February. This year, the funds will help young people who are affected directly and indirectly by substance misuse. Holyoake's Young People's Program (YPP) is one of the beneficiaries. Outstanding young people and youth workers sought for 2013 WA Youth Awards

Western Australian residents are encouraged to nominate an outstanding young person for the annual WA Youth Awards.

The awards, now in their 15th year, were established in 1999 to recognise outstanding young Western Australians aged 12 to 25 years.

In 2013 the WA Youth Awards are proudly presented by the Department for Communities in partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia. The awards are supported by Lotterywest. Click here for more information.

Two Scholarships – Certificate IV in Relationship Education

Delivered by Relationships Australia WA, commencing 13th February 2013

One full scholarship (no cost) is being offered to a community member to enhance skills and knowledge within refugee communities to provide support for families with relationship issues and parenting.

One partial scholarship (total cost to participant is $500) is being offered to a community worker engaged with refugee communities. Click here to read more.

HepatitisWA is facilitating a new peer support service for people living with hepatitis.

The new peer support group assists people achieve better health and well being through discussions and activities. The monthly meetings are confidential, free and provide opportunities to share experiences and thoughts with peers in a friendly and non-judgemental way. Healthy and tasty snacks will be provided.

Ready for a Challenge? Volunteer Opportunities Now Open!

HepatitisWA operates a telephone information & support service which is maintained by volunteer staff, and provides information on hepatitis A, B and C to the general community, and phone support to people affected by hepatitis. Volunteer staff can also participate in our Needle & Syringe Program (NSP) which provides information, equipment and referral to people who chose to inject drugs. Additionally volunteer staff have the opportunity to participate in health promotion and community education events such as University Orientation Days and Health Promotion Fairs at schools and local councils as well as information stalls at Big Day Out and other community events.

Perth Convention Bureau Aspire Program

As a member of a WA association did you know you may be eligible to apply for the Perth Convention Bureau/ City of Perth Convention Scholarship worth $10,000? Parkerville Children and Youth Care Inc will be organising this one and a half day advocacy workshop for professionals working with victims/survivors of sexual assault. This workshop focuses on the journey of victim/survivors, their needs, and your role in supporting them. The Impact of Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Work in WA - Monday 25th Feb

This Forum is relevant to social workers and others involved in direct service delivery to communities, families and individuals as well as workers who are involved in policy development regarding FIFO.
Participants will be able to reflect on their own knowledge and experiences of the effect of FIFO on communities, families and individuals and what innovations participants can introduce into their professional practice in this area.
