Emergency Relief Conference 2013

The bi-annual Emergency Relief Conference will take place on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th May 2013. The theme of the conference in 2013 will focus on DivERsity - diversity in the ways our services assist those who are vulnerable in times of financial crisis and hardship, the diversity of services across the State and the environments in which they operate, and most importantly the diversity in the people - the volunteers, workers and those using the services. Changes to Single Parent Payments and Financial Hardship

Recent changes to social security law affecting single parents will hit on 1st January. Single Parents who currently receive Parenting Payment Single (PPS) will no longer be eligible of or when their youngest child turns eight years old. WACOSS is concerned of the impact of this significant reduction in family income for single parents.Click here for more information.

Update: Fair Work Australia Equal Remuneration Order

WACOSS has prepared this briefing paper for community service organisations in Western Australia to provide a further update on progress with implementation of the Fair Work Australia (FWA) Equal Remuneration Order (ERO) for community service workers covered by the Federal SCHCDS Award. WACOSS has participated in a joint COSS Network submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry on Australia's domestic response to the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health report "Closing the gap within a generation".

New Concessions WA website portal

The WA Government has launched a new website where you can find details on more than 100 concessions, rebates and subsidy schemes provided by the State Government.

The new portal, an initiative WACOSS has been calling for, will make it much easier for citizens to determine their entitlements, or for service providers to assist them.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is now open for business. Susan Pascoe AM was formally appointed as the first Commissioner of the ACNC this December 7th. Click here for more information.

Electricity, water and gas disconnection moratoriums for the Christmas period.

Alinta Energy, Horizon Power, Synergy and the Water Corporation won't be disconnecting households during the Christmas between the following dates:
Alinta Energy: 17th December 2012 until 4th of January 2013
Horizon Power: 17th December 2012 until the 4th of January 2013
Synergy: 19 December 2012 until 7 January 2013
Water Corporation: 17th December 2012 until the 4th of January 2013

First charity registered by the ACNC has human rights focus

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) held its official launch today, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe AM mentioned the significance of the ACNC’s 10 December inauguration. Click here for more information.

No more ASIC annual review fees for charities

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) commenced yesterday as the specialist regulator for charities operating in Australia. The introduction of the ACNC will affect the way charities interact with other regulatory bodies, including the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). The ACNC and ASIC have been working together to ensure a smooth transition to the ACNC for charities that are registered with ASIC as companies or registered bodies.Click here for more information.

Young Leaders in Aged Care: Young Leaders Program Applications Open

This program is hosted in partnership with three aged care organisations - Southcare, MercyCare and Baptistcare. It is a pioneering program to encourage and support more young people (under 35) to consider aged care Boards as an option for volunteering in their community. Commonwealth Contracts – Responding to late contracts, unfair conditions and inappropriate reporting requirements

Commonwealth departments are now required to nominate a Deputy Secretary to fulfil the role of Compact Advocate. The advocate has responsibility for supporting their agency's contribution to, and adoption of new processes to reduce red tape, streamline reporting requirements and implement priority actions under the National Compact and the Government's reform agenda. Shelter WA Housing Options Kit Now Available

With the high cost of housing in WA, it is important that people have useful, accurate information to find the right kind of affordable accommodation. People need to know what to consider and where to go for assistance in seeking crisis or supported accommodation, renting in social housing or the private rental market, and in purchasing a home. Shelter WA's free Housing Options Kit will help connect people to appropriate housing. The kit will be particularly useful to service providers working with people in need of housing, or in need of transitioning from one type of tenure to another such as out of crisis accommodation and into social housing, or from a private rental into affordable home ownership. The Department for Communities has published the Profile of the Middle Years in Western Australia on its website at Profile of the Middle Years
The statistical profile provides a snapshot of middle years children (aged nine to 14) in Western Australia. This profile is one of the seven initiatives that the Department for Communities has committed to in its Middle Years Strategic Directions 2012–2014 available here.

The Independent Social Security Handbook

The Welfare Rights Centre Sydney has just produced the 7th edition of the Independent Social Security Handbook. The Handbook provides community welfare workers in the front line with a simple yet comprehensive guide to the main aspects of the social security system so that they can help their clients through the social security maze.

Free home visits to help households reduce their energy use

Anglicare WA, Red Cross (Darwin College) and the Geraldton Resource Centre are now delivering the Federal government's new Home Energy Saver Scheme (HESS) across Western Australia. The HESS program provides free home visits by professional and experienced home energy assessors. So if your clients are wondering why their energy bills are high, they don't know what to do about it, and are frightened of being unable to pay the next one coming, then a HESS home visit is for them. 2013 National Homelessness Services Achievement Awards

The National Homelessness Services Achievement Awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions that community organisations make to supporting people who are homeless in our communities. The Awards celebrate excellence and innovation by organisations, services and programs responding to the needs of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

If your service or organisation, or one you know, has made a significant contribution to addressing homelessness issues—either at a local, regional, state or national level—tell us about it by nominating for a 2013 National Homelessness Services Achievement Award.
