WACOSS CEO to participate in 2012 Vinnies CEO Sleepout

There are more than 100,000 Australians who sleep rough each night of the year. Just under half of these are women; a quarter of these are under the age of 18.
On Thursday 21 June 2012 the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout will take place in capital cities across Australia. CEOs and senior business and community leaders are invited to rise to the challenge and experience what it is like to be homeless for one night in winter and help the St Vincent de Paul Society to raise awareness of the real facts of homelessness.
All money raised through the sponsorship of participants goes directly towards the ongoing provision of Vinnies' homeless services across the country.

WACOSS Media Release: A modest but forward-looking State Budget, Thursday 17th May

"The Western Australian Council of Social Service welcomes today's budget as a modest budget with some important forward-looking initiatives.
"The Council welcomes the $58.5m investment over 4 years to provide 100 new Child Health Nurses. This important initiative goes two thirds of way to meeting the identified gap of 151 nurses in health services during the crucial early years," said Irina Cattalini, CEO of the Western Australian Council of Social Service today. WACOSS Media Release: WACOSS Welcomes Premier's Promises on Homelessness and Early Years, Thursday 9th May

The Western Australian Council of Social Service has welcomed commitments given by the Premier Colin Barnett at the WACOSS 2012 Community Sector conference to address two of the key asks of its Pre-Budget Submission.

"The Council is pleased to learn that there will be more resources for child health nurses and homelessness services in next week's State Budget," said WACOSS CEO Irina Cattalini today. Click here to read more.

WACOSS Media Release: A better targeted budget – unless you're a single parent, Wednesday 8th May

"This year's Federal Budget takes a positive and constructive approach to rebalancing tax breaks and supports for our wealthiest citizens and strengthening them for those that need them more," said Irina Cattalini, CEO of WACOSS this evening.

2012 Thinker in Residence programme

WACOSS is a project partner with the Commissioner for Children and Young People for the 2012 Thinker in Residence programme. The residency will examine self-regulation among children and will provide parents, health and other professionals, early childhood educators and teachers with strategies to develop and boost the ability of a child to self-regulate. The Alliance for Children at Risk is hosting a breakfast for people in the child protection sector on Thursday 7th June 2012. Click here to read more.

WACOSS & Department of Commerce present: Consumer Rights and Protection - Wednesday 30th May

This FREE community education forum will provide an outline of basic consumer rights for your organisation and the clients you represent, particularly if you work with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities.
A range of free resource materials will be provided, including resources in different languages.

EmpowerWA Workshops: Assisting Clients to save money by using less power at home

These free workshops are a must for anyone who works with clients experiencing financial pressures.

It explains what energy audits involve, so that you can help clients who aren't eligible for a professional home audit, or don't want strangers looking around their home.

Free Training for Emergency Relief workers and volunteers

WACOSS is delivering a series of free workshops around the state for emergency relief workers and volunteers.
Workshops are taking place in Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah, Corrigin, Narrogin, Armadale, Northam, Albany, Mount Barker, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland, Broome, Roebourne and Kununurra until June.

Social Enterprise Fund Grants Closing Soon

A number of workshops will be taking place to help you with your application for the Social Enterprise Fund (SEF) Grants Program, funded by the Government of Western Australia.  This is an exciting new opportunity for investment for not-for-profit community organisations thinking about developing a social enterprise.

Peer Capacity Building Grants

The Mental Health Commission is making available non-recurrent grants to support and accelerate the capacity of organisations to deliver high quality, recovery-focused services by encouraging the employment of people with a lived experience of mental health, or of caring for someone who does, and to promote partnerships that ensure peer work programs are embraced by both the Community Managed and Public Mental Health Services working together. Ethnic Organisations Fund 2012–2015 is Open for Tender

The Ethnic Organisations Fund was initiated in 2009 and aims to support the OMI Strategic Plan 2009-13 and organisations formed specifically to deliver services to culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities.
Ethnic organisations are invited to make an Offer that meets the objectives and priority areas identified within the Request for Service. Offers will be evaluated on the basis of the extent to which the Offer provides value for money to the State Party (Department of Local Government, Office of Multicultural Interests). The funding available for each service is between $50,000- $100,000 per annum. The tender closes at 4pm, Thursday 31 May 2012.

Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream - Saturday 19th May

WACOSS staff member Gina Olivieri is delivering another "Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream" symposium on Saturday May 19th at Ruah in West Perth.
The event is a presentation which essentially explores the condition the world and its inhabitants are in, how we got to be that way, and what we can do about it. The symposium proposes the idea that environmental sustainability, social justice and spiritual fulfilment could be the guiding principle of our time. National Sorry Day Events WA 2012

The Bringing Them Home Committee (WA) will be hosting two special events for National Sorry Day (Saturday 26th May) this year. A ceremony and free sausage sizzle will be held at Wellington Square from 9 to 10 am and a concert featuring Archie Roach will be held at Winthrop Hall, UWA from 4 – 6.30pm. Aboriginal Community Innovation Grants

WA Health is seeking to fund not-for-profit organisations to implement innovative programs that promote Aboriginal health and wellbeing within community settings. Improving the health of Aboriginal people is everyone's business and requires collaboration across the health and non-health sectors. Through the Aboriginal Health Division's new Pilot Innovation Strategy, several Aboriginal Community Innovation Grants valued at up to $5,000 are available. Click here for more information. Fairground Youth Sector Conference 2012: Registrations Open

YACWA's Fairground takes place every two years as an opportunity for the youth sector to network and share ideas and common experiences whilst focusing on state-wide issues of importance to young people and the sector.

2012 will be the third Fairground conference following similar events in 2008 and 2010. The conference vision is for a youth sector event that is the most topical, relevant and results-orientated youth conference ever held in Western Australia.

The 2012 conference promises to be a professional, policy-driven event that is inspiring, fun and creative. The keynotes will be informative and gritty, the entertainment unique and the program objective based and functional.

Reconciliation Week 2012

Reconciliation Week will be celebrated across Australia between 27th May and 3rd June 2012.

The Department of Indigenous Affairs (WA) has an advocacy role in promoting mutual respect and understanding between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.
