Cross Sectoral Collaboration & Networking Day

Presented by the Department of Regional Development and Lands the Cross Sectoral Collaboration & Networking Event "Community Conversations" will be held on the opening day of the WACOSS Conference (Tuesday 8th May 2012) at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This full day facilitated event will provide a range of activities and opportunities to share your ideas and experiences whether you are working at the front line as a practitioner, advocate or educator or behind the scenes in a board, committee, management, or administrative role.

WACOSS Media Release: Smart Not Tough Approach Needed for Jobseekers - Friday 20th April

"It is time we took a smarter approach to tackling unemployment, underemployment and the problems created by short-term, casual and insecure work," said Irina Cattalini, CEO of WACOSS today.
"The Council is concerned that significant resources are being wasted on a punitive compliance approach to unemployed job seekers that focuses on 'participation requirements' with no evidence that this has any impact on improving employment outcomes." Click here to read more.

WACOSS focus group: Energy Hardship Services

WACOSS will be consulting with Community Service Organisations (CSOs) to gather information on how they are working with clients experiencing energy hardship. Participants will be introduced to concepts of Energy Efficiency, time of use and block tariffs, smart grid technologies, and ways to address energy hardship in WA. Click here to read more.

Australian Community Sector Survey

Australian Community Sector Survey is now open until Monday 30th April 2012.

We are asking for your help to ensure that the Australian Community Sector Survey provides the best possible information about our sector and the people that we work with.

This annual survey is the only regular source of information about the community services sector, by the community sector. It is a key advocacy tool in highlighting unmet demand for services and key challenges facing organisations trying to address them. It is used widely by policy makers and researchers.

Each survey completed will go in the draw to win free registration to ACOSS' 2013 conference, a prize worth around $650!

ACOSS is hosting a Post-Budget Lunch with the Treasurer the Hon Wayne Swan on May 14 for the Community Sector. This is a key opportunity hosted by ACOSS to provide a comprehensive analysis of the implications of this year's Federal Budget for people experiencing poverty and inequality in Australia and the organisations that work to support them. Working in Partnerships Seminar: Improving Justice and Therapeutic Outcomes for Children and Adults Who Have Experienced Abuse - Thursday 26th April

WACOSS, Edith Cowan University - Social Justice Research Centre and Parkerville Children and Youth Care are pleased to present a unique opportunity for the community services sector and government to learn about and discuss emerging international best-practice models for working with children, young people and adults who are victims of criminal violence and harm and who require a number of different service responses across agencies.

Delivering Community Services in Partnership (DCSP) Policy - Sector workshops

WACOSS will be holding a number of workshops, based around understanding the practical impact of the Delivering Community Services in Partnership (DCSP) Policy upon your organisation. Participants will learn to better prepare and position their organisation to take advantage of the new state government funding and contracting arrangements.

Upcoming regional sessions include; Bunbury on Thursday 26th April, Kalgoorlie on Tuesday 15th May, Mandurah on Friday 18th May, Albany on Tuesday 22nd May and Port Hedland on Tuesday 12th June. The final metropolitan session will be held on Tuesday 24th April.

EmpowerWA workshop: Assisting clients to save money by using less power at home- Thursday 3rd May

Want to learn tips on how to reduce household energy use? Want to discover which appliances use the most energy and water? What to learn skills that you can pass on to your clients?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then this workshop is for you. The EmpowerWA workshop will teach you about how to save energy around the house while not forgoing comfort. It will help you understand where energy is used and what you can do to reduce your energy use. It will also teach you about carbon pricing and the clean energy package.

Social Enterprise Fund Grants Now Open

Leadership WA Regional Leadership Program: Applications now open for Pilbara and Mid West

Leadership WA is thrilled to announce that applications are now open for both the Pilbara and Mid West Regional Leadership Programs.

Running from June to December, these Leadership Programs will use an experiential learning approach with an emphasis on personal leadership development and enhancing leadership capacity across the regions.

Sexualisation of Children and its Impact on their Wellbeing – A guide for parents, members of the community, media, advertisers and retailers emphasises that the wellbeing of children and young people is everyone's responsibility.

CREATE Foundation 'What's the Plan'

The CREATE Foundation has been committed to connecting children and young people with experience in care with each other. Empowering them to develop to realise their potential and to maximise the ways in which the care system can change for the better.

It's alarming that recently CREATE uncovered that 68% of young people who should have been developing a leaving care plan either did not have a plan or did not know whether or not they had one. Click here to read more.

Petrol Sniffing Legislation Will Save Lives

In the harsh desert country of Central Australia, the Aboriginal people who have lived here since time immemorial move freely between communities without regard for arbitrary state borders. For the relatively small number amongst them who have succumbed to the ugliness of sniffing petrol fumes this presents a deadly problem. Click here to read more.

WA Training Awards 2012

Applications are now being called for the WA Training Awards.

In previous years there have been very few nominations from Community Services Health & Education industries where there are many eligible entrants; the Training Council is encouraging these industries to get involved this year! To find out more about nominating outstanding apprentices, trainees or vocational students click here.

Another of the award categories is the WA Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Training Award, which is focused on migrants who have overcome various challenges by undertaking training. Click here to read more.

Healthier WA Award 2012

The AMA (WA) & Healthway Healthier WA Award recognises WA organisations that have, through a specific venture, project or program, made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of health and wellbeing outcomes which impact across the WA community. A $10,000 grant will be awarded in 2012 to the winner of this prestigious award.

Bridges out of Poverty - Thursday 26th April 2012

'Bridges out of Poverty', a professional development workshop for people working with families that have experienced poverty.
It is a most useful workshop to understand the motivation behind many decision making processes of people from various social and economic backgrounds.
This workshop will be held in Armadale, presented by Communicare with the support of the City of Armadale's Champion Centre.
Numbers are limited with priority given to those working in the Armadale area.

Reconciliation Week 2012

Reconciliation Week will be celebrated across Australia between 27th May and 3rd June 2012.

The Department of Indigenous Affairs (WA) has an advocacy role in promoting mutual respect
and understanding between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other
Australians. As such, we are embarking on a community awareness campaign in the lead
