Community Services Excellence Awards Finalists Announced

Congratulations to all the finalists!

The Community Services Excellence Awards publicly acknowledge the contribution made by the community services sector and its role in helping to shape, strengthen and inspire our community.

Nominations across the five categories of the awards program this year revealed some outstanding Western Australians and community organisations. With such a strong field of nominations, the judging process was highly competitive. Congratulations to the 29 finalists of the 2012 WA Community Services Excellence Awards.

Networking Day

The Department of Regional Development and Lands presents the WACOSS 2012 Pre-Conference Cross Sectoral Collaboration Networking Day "Community Conversations", Tuesday 8th May 2012 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The day is designed as a creative opportunity to bring together community, government and private sectors to consider just what does working collaboratively really look like?

This full day facilitated event will provide a range of activities and opportunities to share your ideas and experiences whether you are working at the front line as a practitioner, advocate or educator or behind the scenes in a board, committee, management, or administrative role.

This is a free event for all not- for-profit organisations.

Australian Community Sector Survey

Australian Community Sector Survey is now open until Monday 30th April 2012.

We are asking for your help to ensure that the Australian Community Sector Survey provides the best possible information about our sector and the people that we work with.

This annual survey is the only regular source of information about the community services sector, by the community sector. It is a key advocacy tool in highlighting unmet demand for services and key challenges facing organisations trying to address them. It is used widely by policy makers and researchers.

The Emergency Relief Scoping Project is now underway. Our Project Officer Leela James is currently halfway through extensive metropolitan consultations with Emergency Relief service providers. These consultations are providing the ER Scoping Project with key information and we are inviting you to also contribute to this valuable project.

Do you have a positive story around energy efficiency?

If so we would love to hear it. WACOSS is looking for positive stories around energy efficiency and how it has benefited either yourself or an organisation that you are involved with. It could be that you have done some home handy work to improve the energy efficiency of your home, changed some of your behaviours to reduce your energy costs, or have bought energy efficiency appliances so that you are helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Working in Partnerships Seminar: Improving Justice and Therapeutic Outcomes for Children and Adults Who Have Experienced Abuse

Delivering Community Services in Partnership (DCSP) Policy - Sector workshops

WACOSS will be holding a number of workshops, based around understanding the practical impact of the Delivering Community Services in Partnership (DCSP) Policy upon your organisation. Participants will learn to better prepare and position their organisation to take advantage of the new state government funding and contracting arrangements.

Upcoming regional sessions include; Broome on Wednesday 11th April, Geraldton on Monday 16th April and Bunbury on Thursday 26th April. Metropolitan sessions will be held on Friday 20th & Tuesday 24th April.

Social Enterprise Fund Grants Now Open

A number of workshops will be taking place in the coming weeks (mid April to mid May) to help you with your application for the Social Enterprise Fund (SEF) Grants Program, funded by the Government of Western Australia.  This is an exciting new opportunity for investment for not-for-profit community organisations thinking about developing a social enterprise.

First Event for 'Nature of the Relationship' series for 2012

Titled 'Is this service what the community needs? Lessons in practical innovation, collaboration and co-design of services.' this event, to be held on Friday 20th April, will be in the style of a lecture (presented by David Albury) with an opportunity following the presentation for Q&A.

In the harsh desert country of Central Australia, the Aboriginal people who have lived here since time immemorial move freely between communities without regard for arbitrary state borders. WA Training Award 2012

Applications are now being called for the WA Training Awards.

In previous years there have been very few nominations from Community Services Health & Education industries where there are many eligible entrants; the Training Council is encouraging these industries to get involved this year! To find out more about nominating outstanding apprentices, trainees or vocational students click here.

Another of the award categories is the WA Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Training Award, which is focused on migrants who have overcome various challenges by undertaking training. Click here to read more.

"Creating a Just Future" WA State Conference October - Call for Papers (closes Friday 13th April)

The aim of the 2012 Conference is to engage registrants with thought provoking and creative ideas around ways we can work to create a "Just Future" for those members of our communities who are the most vulnerable. The registrants will be actively involved in the sessions, benefit from the collective experiences of everyone present and leave the conference with clear directions for future actions in their own workplaces.

Healthier WA Award 2012

The AMA (WA) & Healthway Healthier WA Award recognises WA organisations that have, through a specific venture, project or program, made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of health and wellbeing outcomes which impact across the WA community. A $10,000 grant will be awarded in 2012 to the winner of this prestigious award.

Bridges out of Poverty 26th April 2012

'Bridges out of Poverty', a professional development workshop for people working with families that have experienced poverty.
It is a most useful workshop for understand the motivation behind many decision making processes of people from various social and economic backgrounds.
