Rising Cost of Living Report Released (Updated) 22nd December

The cost of living is rising faster than wages for low income working families in Western Australia, leaving many households struggling to make ends meet. This is the key message of a report released today by the Western Australian Council of Social Service.

Outcomes Based Procurement Workshops: Focus Group Participants Sought

The Funding and Contracting Services Unit of the Department of Finance is seeking 15 Not-for-Profits to participate in a focus group as they work to develop and deliver outcomes based procurement workshops for both government agencies and NFP community organisations throughout February and March next year.

The Focus Group, planned for the end of January 2011, is expected to take 2-3 hours. NFP organisations will have the opportunity to raise specific areas of need in the training on outcomes based procurement and will also be asked to provide any examples of outcomes based procurement (models, experiences, approaches) which can be shared with the sector.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - WACOSS 2012 Conference The Big Picture 8th - 10th May 2012

The West Australian Council of Social Service has great pleasure inviting you to participate in the
WACOSS 2012 Conference THE BIG PICTURE by submitting an abstract for consideration by the conference
committee to present at the Conference or Cross Sectoral Collaboration Day.
The Conference will be focusing on the Big Issues for community services, the sector and civil society at
large. Beyond tackling our own organisation challenges we can work collaboratively to drive change and
use our collective voice to build a united civil society built on the principles of social justice and community
engagement. The two day Conference follows a full day community and government networking event
focused on working in collaboration to achieve a sustainable community service sector.

NEW Just for Boards

A training and networking program for current and aspiring community service sector board members.
In 2012 we are pleased to be able to offer a series of evening seminars and full day workshops for board members in the community sector. The 'Just for Boards' program offers valuable training and networking opportunities for board members or those aspiring to be on boards. By holding some sessions in the evening we hope this increases the accessibility of this training.

Update on NGO Housing Initiative Eligibility- Applications Close 30th December

The recent NGO Housing Initiative sought to provide a rapid and targeted investment into NGO housing in high-cost regional locations to sustain the delivery of key State Government funded NGO services.

The $35 million program was funded by the Royalties for Regions Fund and administered by the Department of Housing and delivered a total of 58 houses in the Pilbara and Kimberley.  Click here to read more

Last Chance to Support Angelhands $50k in 50 days

Angelhands provides traumatised men, women and children with safe people, programs and places
after an experience of assault, glassing, home invasion, murder, culpable driving or violence.
angelhands assists people regain trust and hope, whilst promoting healing and full trauma recovery.
To provide this unique program angelhands relies on benefactors, sponsors, grants and donations.

Angelhands has an approximate $100K shortfall in operational funding this year. Generously our key
partner has pledged $50K if we can raise the balance. angelhands is calling on you to get into the
season of giving by partnering with angelhands to raise $50K in 50 Days by 25th December 2011.
This is very achievable if many people give a small amount for example, if 50 people each give $1K or
if 500 give $100 we'll get there in no time at all!

Lifeline WA is moving premises in January and thanks to a Lottery West grant have an assortment of furniture available that may suit small not for profits.
Items include desks, credenzas, pedestals, filing cabinets, task chairs, visitors chairs, training chairs, lounge style chairs and sofas, Board cabinet with fridge, Book Cases, Assorted tables and shelving units, Stationery cupboards and a powered desk.

The furniture needs to be removed on the 16th January 2012.

Community Legal Centres Association Snapshot Report on Human Rights Development in WA

To mark International Human Rights Day this Saturday December 10, the Community Legal Centres Association has today released a snapshot report on human rights developments in WA for 2011.
Using contributions from community legal centres and other human rights advocacy groups, the Association has produced a report card style document listing the good the bad and the neglected human rights issues in the State.
CLCA Executive Director, Myles Kunzli said "The reports from contributors provide a mixed result for WA. There is a range of positive and negative developments and many human rights issues that are just ignored. Government and other players have happily met their human rights obligations in many circumstance but in others have neglected or wilfully worked against human rights.

Are You a Dad? Do you or your partner have a mental illness? If you answered yes to both questions, we would love your help!
The Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI) national initiative has developed a Fathers Information section for their website ( They want to provide practical information for Dads experiencing mental illness in their day-to-day lives, and need feedback to help refine their website (to be launched to the public mid 2012).

Early Christmas present for deafblind charity

Senses Foundation and its clients have received an early Christmas present from a generous local supporter.
PACT Construction, of Belmont, has presented the Burswood-based charity with a cheque for a massive $10,000 to help fund two of its vital family support programs – Sibling Support and Families Matter.
Senses Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation providing services to people with disabilities, and unique services to people of all ages who are deafblind. Last financial year the Foundation provided almost 122,000 hours of direct services to 433 clients. Click here to read more

Have your say- National Regulatory System Community Housing

Public consultation in Western Australia on a National Regulatory System for community housing is now underway. The new system aims to grow the industry, create a level playing field for housing providers Australiawide, and better protect tenants through consistent national standards for providers and their services.

Perth CBD Gift Box Pop-Up Store Opening

Every year, Perth families living on or below the poverty line are unable to take part in the act of gift-giving due to financial stress.

With support from the City of Perth, the Perth Youth Advisory Council are hosting a Christmas pop-up store filled entirely with donated stock. Buyers will be able to purchase any item in the store for a donation amount of their choosing. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

Upcoming Workshops at Anglicare

Dangerous Liaisons (Bunbury workshop)

The purpose of this one day training workshop is to look at what is and what should be the nature of the relationship between a worker and their clients in terms of appropriate boundaries.

It will look at the dilemmas a worker faces in working with clients. How does the worker for example, establish a friendly relationship with the client in order to help the person address their issues or problems without crossing boundaries that may pose a risk to the client, the worker themselves or to the agency? What are the appropriate ethical boundaries for working with clients? How can you be assertive but not aggressive towards clients when trying to maintain appropriate relationships and boundaries?

Ethical Decision Making (Bunbury workshop)

The purpose of this one day workshop is to look at the various dilemmas human service workers face in their everyday work and identify strategies for dealing with these dilemmas in an ethically appropriate and safe way.

The work human service workers do is often fraught with numerous dilemmas. Perhaps a worker may have information about a client or a member of the client's family that the worker feels they 'ought' to act on but to do so would clearly not be in their client's 'best interest'. What, for example, does the worker do when they become aware that their client is getting a greater benefit from Centrelink then the client is entitled to? What is the worker's responsibility when they believe a client may harm themselves, harm someone else, may have harmed a child or any one of a number of other ethical dilemmas?

Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium

The "Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream" symposium will be delivered on Saturday, February 4 at City West Lotteries House.

Blooming Minds at Work Symposium

Blooming Minds is hosting: Blooming Minds at Work Symposium in early 2012, and are seeking abstracts and presentations related to the area.
Papers presented may have been previously presented or published. This is a burgeoning area of research, and given that the increase in mental health services for those at risk of psychological injury at work is increasing at an alarming rate, it is also timely.

6th Australasian Housing Researchers' Conference 2012

The Centre for Housing, Urban and Regional Planning at The University of Adelaide are proudly hosting the 6th Australasian Housing Researchers’ Conference 2012 (AHRC12).

The AHRC12 is the premier conference for housing researchers across Australasia, allowing delegates to share their research findings with their colleagues and peers on a range of themes including homelessness, housing policy and vulnerable groups and housing. The AHRC12 includes a dynamic and thought provoking series of keynote addresses, researchers presentations and social events.
