MEDIA RELEASE: WACOSS calls for closer scrutiny as Western Power unknowingly puts lives at risk. 22nd June 2011

"WACOSS is extremely concerned about a number of serious transgressions of Western Power's licence obligations that put customers' health and safety at risk," said WACOSS Chief Executive Officer, Ms Irina Cattalini today.
The notice issued by the Economic Regulation Authority today indicates that Western Power had contravened two 'Type 1' licence obligations. Click here to read this media release in full

Proposed WA Regional Community Sector Capacity Building Project Call for Expressions of Interest From Regional Community Services

WACOSS is calling for expressions of interest within the community services sector, specifically existing or planned regional networks; within the nine Development Commission areas to participate in a new project: WA Regional Community Sector Capacity Building Project. 

The WA Regional Community Sector Capacity Building Project will create a mechanism through which two way discussion of across sector development and community social policy work can occur, thus reducing delays in implementation of necessary sector responses and capacity building. This combined and integrated strategy offers necessary information, expertise, and the building of momentum, to drive discussion, practices and service delivery at a statewide regional level. WACOSS Submission to Australia's Urban Water Sector Productivity Commission Inquiry Draft Report

On 10 June 2011 WACOSS tabled a submission to the Productivity Commission's Draft Report on Australia's Urban Water Sector. The Inquiry has provided a unique opportunity to consider future objectives for urban water markets in the face increasing cost of living pressures and challenging future climate and water supply scenarios.
Given the essentiality of water to basic household functions such as drinking, cooking, bathing and general hygiene, and the negative health and societal implications of restricting water supply to individuals, families and the community, WACOSS has argued that universal access to an essential volume of water must be central to the objectives of the inquiry. Self Directed Services Conference Update

A self-directed service design conference, hosted by the Partnership Forum, will be held on 10 August 2011.

The key objective of the conference is to generate discussion and interest in self-directed service design among people and consumer groups, community sector organisations and government agencies. It aims to do this in an open and collaborative style and is intended to lead to future conversations and events. The conference will also provide practical ideas on how to implement self-directed service design. Click here to read this article in full

The Community Leadership Development Program is a joint initiative of WACOSS and MODAL, a business training and consultancy organisation. The program allows managers, coordinators and team leaders of community service organisations to achieve a Diploma of Management over the 12 month program.

The program has been running for eight years, covering topics such as how to manage people, projects, operational plans, budgets and personal work priorities while maintaining high standards of service, team effectiveness and continuous improvement.

We are accepting applications for this program until July 1st, 5pm.  Applicants must be in a leadership/management role in a not-for-profit organisation and be responsible for supervising at least two other people in their organisation.

ACOSS leads delegation on equal pay fuding to Canberra

ACOSS is stepping up the campaign for government commitments to fully fund the outcome of equal pay before Fair Work Australia, leading a delegation of COSS directors and CEO's to Canberra this week for a series of meetings with key federal ministers, MPs and Senators. The next Commonwealth People's Forum will be held in Perth, Western Australia, from 25 to 27 October 2011.

The Commonwealth People's Forum (CPF), brings together civil society representatives from around the world, to discuss and debate key issues facing Commonwealth people. Held every two years in the run up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the CPF is the single biggest opportunity for civil society to engage with Commonwealth leaders on global development issues.

Free Budget Counselling Training in Kalgoorlie

WACOSS are hosting free Budget Counselling training June 30-July 1 in Kalgoorlie. This training is suitable for anyone who works in community services, particularly emergency relief, who would like to know how to provide basic financial literacy education to their clients. There are still places available for this course, please register by June 23 by returning the registration form or contact training@wacoss.org.au for more information.

Premier's Circular Delivering Community Services in Partnership Policy

The Premier Colin Barnett recently issued a Circular to all State Government Public Authorities which clearly stipulates that compliance with the new Delivering Community Services in Partnership Policy is mandatory for all public authorities.

This is a very strong signal that there is commitment from the top to implementing this reform and ensuring government agencies begin forging a new relationship with not-for-profit community services that is based on real partnership.Click here for more information

Elder abuse research launched on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Advocare Inc. was pleased to announce the completion of a significant elder abuse research project to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June.

The research, which looked at the extent of elder abuse in Western Australia, was particularly significant due to the increasing size of Western Australia's older population. Click here to read this article in full

The Swinburne University’s Institute for Social Research, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, is conducting a survey on women and housing affordability in Australia.

New online service helps health professionals address problem gambling

People with gambling problems often have mental health, addiction and relationship issues and may visit a range of health and welfare professionals before they tackle their gambling.

Help to Host Seniors Week Events in 2011

COTA WA, in partnership with the Department for Communities and Lotterywest, will be assisting community groups and local government organisations hold events during Bendigo Bank WA Seniors 2011.
Grants of up to $1000 are available through the Seniors Week Community Grants Program, as a contribution towards meeting the costs associated with hosting events in Western Australia between Sunday 6 November and Sunday 13 November.

Your Online Resource Coming Soon

Thanks to a Lotterywest grant, small to medium community sector organisations in urban and regional Western Australia will benefit from an online support framework now in development by Community Sector Services.

Through its website Community Sector Services (CSS) will provide resources such as:

• an online ICT helpdesk
• tools and resources
• the ability to host forums on matters relevant to the sector using social media tools.

The Commissioner for Children and Young People is conducting a review of three of their guidelines publications.

• Are you listening? - Guidelines for making complaints processes accessible and responsive for children and young people
• Improving legislation for children and young people; and
• Involving children and young people – participation guidelines.

CCYP are keen to talk to some agencies that have used any of these guidelines to assess whether they found the publication to be useful, how the agency used the publication and how CCYP could improve it.

Mission Australia's Annual Youth Survey

Mission Australia's annual Youth Survey - the largest of its kind in Australia - has been undertaken each year since 2002. Conducted between April and July, the survey asks young Australians aged 11 to 24 what they value, where they turn for advice and support, what issues concern them, how they are involved with their community and their feelings about their future
